Day 1: Saturday 26 April 2008
Randburg - randfontein - carltonville - parys
The tour started at Cresta shopping centre after a lovely sponsored breakfast by Buchini’s. Douglas Rider, a previous pro elite cyclist started the tour after receiving an “old” trophy from Heinrich which had his name on it from a hill climb competition. We started “almost” promptly at 08:00 – OK a few minutes past 8 in perfect weather. Cool and the sun shining. It made quite e new experience after starting last year’s tour in the rain J We climbed a bit from Cresta to Ontdekkers, but had a fairly flat ride to mid morning snack.
For the mid morning snack we stopped just after Randfontein. As Rudolph had the honour of being the last person on last year’s tour to wear the Zephis jersey he also had the honour to hand it out for the first time on the tour. After a short speech he handed it out to Douw (not a surprise). Some rolling hills on the next section saw us sprinting down a long hill to lunch at the Engen garage. Henro took the sprint. Douw handed the Zephir to Lucky – one of the new riders from the jacaranda Childre’s home. From The lunch break to Parys we had quite a bit of rolling hills and we finished the stage in 2.5 hours with Sias winning the sprint.
We are staying at the Cyclone Factory – as we did two years ago. Tomorrow we cycle to Welkom – 170km fairly flat.
